Lasting Power of Attorney

Your LPA exists to protect you. Only if your family can find it.

A Lasting Power of Attorney is one of the most important legal documents you will ever sign. It grants a trusted person the authority to make decisions on your behalf — about your finances, your property, your medical treatment, your daily care — if you lose the mental capacity to make those decisions yourself.

But an LPA nobody can locate is an LPA that cannot do its job. After Me stores your LPA — and everything that goes with it — in an encrypted vault on your device. Your appointed attorney accesses it instantly via a single QR code. No passwords. No accounts. No searching.

The Window That Closes

Under the Mental Capacity Act 2005, a Lasting Power of Attorney must be created and registered with the Office of the Public Guardian while you still have mental capacity. Once that capacity is lost — through dementia, stroke, or serious accident — the window closes permanently.

Without a registered LPA, your family must apply to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship order. That process can take 6 to 12 months. It can cost thousands of pounds. And it still may not reflect what you would have wanted.

The LPA itself is only half the answer. The other half is making sure the right person can find it, identify the attorney, and act immediately when it matters.

What After Me Stores Alongside Your LPA

An LPA document is just the beginning. After Me lets you store everything your attorney needs in one place:

  • A scanned copy of your registered LPA — both types if applicable
  • The name, contact details, and role of your appointed attorney
  • Your OPG reference number for the registered LPA
  • The name and address of the solicitor who drafted it
  • A plain written note with instructions on where the original is held
  • Your Health and Welfare preferences — in your own words
  • Supporting documents — medical records, care preferences, advance directives
NOTE: The original registered LPA must remain with your solicitor or the Office of the Public Guardian. After Me does not replace that. It ensures your attorney knows exactly where to find it and what to do the moment they need to act.

Two Types. Both Matter.

Property and Financial Affairs LPA — Allows your attorney to manage your bank accounts, pay bills, handle investments, and sell property on your behalf — either while you have capacity or only when you lose it, depending on how it is drawn.

Health and Welfare LPA — Allows your attorney to make decisions about your medical treatment, care arrangements, place of residence, and daily routine — including, if you choose, decisions about life-sustaining treatment.

Most people need both. After Me stores both.

How It Works

  1. Scan or import your LPA — Use the built-in document scanner or import a PDF directly. Both LPA types stored in the Legal category.
  2. Add a directions document — Write a simple note telling your attorney where the original is registered, the OPG reference number, and who to contact first.
  3. Create your Family Kit — One button generates an encrypted .afterme file and a printed QR Key Card for your appointed attorney.
  4. Hand it over — Your attorney scans the QR code when they need to act. The vault opens in under 60 seconds. No account. No password. No delay.
