Getting started

New to After Me? Here's how to set up your vault in under 20 minutes.

1
Set up biometric lock
Enable Face ID or Touch ID. This creates your vault key — stored in the Secure Enclave, never on our servers.
2
Scan your documents
Use the built-in scanner or import from Files / Photos. Organise into 8 categories: Identity, Financial, Legal, and more.
3
Create your Family Kit
Once you have documents in your vault, go to the Family Kit tab and tap Create. The kit requires at least one document — it is an encrypted copy of your vault. Print or share the QR Key Card with a trusted person. That's your legacy sorted.

Security & Privacy

Keeping your data safe

All documents are encrypted with AES-256-GCM — the same standard used by governments and financial institutions worldwide. Your encryption key is generated on your device, stored in the iOS Secure Enclave (or Android Keystore), and protected by your biometric authentication (Face ID / Touch ID). The key never leaves your device and we have no copy of it.
No. After Me uses zero-knowledge architecture — your documents are encrypted with a key only you control. We have no technical ability to access, view, or decrypt your data. This is not a policy promise; it is the fundamental architecture of the system.
Very little. We collect anonymised crash reports (device model, OS version, and stack traces) to help fix bugs. We never collect document content, document titles, your name, your email, or your location. There is no After Me account — we do not know who you are. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Deleting the app permanently removes all local data from your device. If you have cloud backup enabled or a Personal Recovery Kit, you can restore your vault on a new installation. Without a backup, your data is unrecoverable — by design.
Only if you explicitly enable cloud backup in Settings. When enabled, an encrypted copy of your vault is stored in your personal iCloud (iOS) or Google Drive (Android) account. Your encryption key is stored separately. After Me has no access to your cloud account.

Recovery & Backup

Never lose access to your vault

If you enabled cloud backup, install After Me on your new device. Your vault will be restored automatically from iCloud (iOS) or Google Drive (Android) — you just need to pass biometric authentication. Alternatively, use your Personal Recovery Kit: the .afterme file and printed QR Recovery Card.
A Personal Recovery Kit is your own backup system — an encrypted .afterme file paired with a printed QR Recovery Card. Store the .afterme file on a USB drive in a safe place, and keep the QR card separately (or with a trusted person). Both are needed to restore; neither works alone. Create one in Settings → Personal Recovery.
A Family Kit is designed for your loved ones to access your vault after you pass. It contains an encrypted copy of your vault documents and a printed QR Key Card. To create a kit, you must first have at least one document in your vault — the kit is a snapshot of everything you have stored at that moment. Give the QR card to a trusted family member. When the time comes, they scan it with any camera and your vault opens — no account, no password needed.
Whenever you add, update, or remove documents from your vault. The app will show you a warning on the Dashboard when your kits become stale (out of sync with your current vault). We recommend updating them at least once a year as a minimum.
Yes. You can enable cloud backup for automatic encrypted backups, create a Personal Recovery Kit for offline backup, and create a Family Kit for your loved ones — all simultaneously. We recommend having at least two: cloud backup and either a Personal Recovery Kit or Family Kit.

Documents & Vault

Managing your documents

After Me supports JPEG, PNG, and PDF files. You can scan physical documents using your device's camera (with auto edge-detection and enhancement), import from your Photos library, or select files directly from your device's Files app.
Tap the + button in the Document Library, then choose "Scan Document". Position your document in good lighting. The scanner automatically detects edges, corrects perspective, and enhances contrast. Tap to capture or let it capture automatically. You can review and retake each page before saving.
Documents are organised into 8 categories: Identity (passport, driving licence), Financial (bank accounts, investments), Property (deeds, mortgage), Insurance (life, health, home), Medical (advance directives, prescriptions), Legal (will, power of attorney), Digital (online accounts, passwords), and Personal (letters, photos, wishes). Each document can have a title, notes, and expiry date reminder.
The free tier allows up to 5 documents. Premium users can store up to 500 MB of encrypted data. Your current storage usage is shown in Settings → Vault Information. Most vaults — even with high-quality scans of all major documents — comfortably fit within this limit.
Premium users can create up to 5 separate vaults, each with its own encryption key and storage. This is useful for managing documents for elderly parents, for example. Switch between vaults in Settings → Manage Vaults. Each vault has its own Family Kit and recovery options.

Plans & Billing

Pricing and purchases

The free tier includes up to 5 documents, all 8 document categories, biometric vault lock, and the ability to import and scan documents. The free tier is read-only forever — your data is always accessible and exportable, even if you never upgrade.
Premium removes the 5-document free tier limit (up to 500 MB storage), unlocks Family Kit creation, enables multiple vaults (up to 5), and provides priority support. Choose between an annual plan (£34.99/year) or a lifetime purchase (£79.99, one-time — then never again). There is no subscription required for your documents to remain accessible.
Go to Settings → Subscription → Restore Purchases. This checks your Apple ID for any existing purchases associated with your account. Make sure you are signed in to the same Apple ID used for the original purchase. If the issue persists, contact us at support@myafterme.co.uk.
Manage your subscription through your device's App Store settings: Settings (iPhone) → Your Name → Subscriptions. You'll retain premium access until the end of your current billing period. Cancelling does not delete your documents.
No. Your documents are always yours. If your premium lapses, you revert to the free tier (read-only for documents beyond the 5-document limit, but nothing is deleted). You can still access, view, and export all your existing documents.

The .afterme Format

Open and future-proof

The .afterme format is an open, documented standard — a ZIP file containing an AES-256-GCM encrypted vault, a key file, a manifest, and a README with step-by-step recovery instructions. It is designed to be opened without our app using freely available tools. We publish the full specification and an open-source decoder. See the format specification for technical details.
Your documents remain fully accessible. The .afterme format is open and publicly documented. Anyone can write a decoder using the specification. The README inside every .afterme file contains step-by-step instructions for recovering documents using standard command-line tools — no After Me app required.
No. The .afterme file is encrypted with a key derived from the access key (encoded in the QR code) using PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256 at 600,000 iterations. Without the correct access key, the file is cryptographically unreadable — it cannot be brute-forced with current or near-future computing resources.

Data & Privacy

How to delete your data

After Me stores everything exclusively on your device. No documents, keys, or personal information are held on our servers — so there is nothing on our side to delete.

To permanently delete all your data, open the app and go to Settings → Developer → Delete All Data. This immediately and irreversibly wipes your encrypted vault, all stored documents, your biometric key, and every app preference from the device. The deletion cannot be undone.

If you uninstall the app without first deleting your data, the encrypted vault files remain in your device storage until the operating system removes them as part of the uninstall process. On both iOS and Android, a full app uninstall removes all associated app data.

The only off-device data we may hold is anonymous crash diagnostics (Sentry) — these contain no personal information, no document content, and no vault data. To request deletion of crash logs, email us at the address below.
